As part of UNU-CPR’s Global Governance Innovation Platform, this workshop brought together several global alliances to gather insights that can inform the design of new multilateral mechanisms across diverse thematic areas.

Session 1: Participants were oriented to the diversity of alliances represented. Each representative provided an overview of their alliance, highlighting the institutional design that enabled an effective response to global challenges. Reflections focused on the formative period of each alliance and how it helped unlock cooperation, providing participants with a deeper understanding of key actors, design rationale, and structural features.

Session 2: The workshop analyzed major multilateral processes, including the 2023 SDG Declaration, the 2024 Pact for the Future and Global Digital Compact, and the draft outcome document for FfD4, revealing shared governance interests such as transparency, accountability, decision-making mechanisms, innovative financing approaches, and inclusive consultations. Participants examined distinctive governance features of each alliance, exploring lessons for UN membership and potential applications in emerging areas such as digital governance, debt governance, and climate and environmental governance. Discussions emphasized how unique design elements can build momentum, foster compromise, and enable cooperation.
